about

Get out the building! Firedrill! Get out the building!

The Tokyo-based producer, programmer, and legendary internet radio host and DJ is known for making things happen. Yep: on the information superhighway, Firedrill does what he wants and he does it damn well, coolly cruising between computers and crowds like the data boss he is. In the sticky-icky real world, however, he lives a different existence.

Shimokatastrophe is a five-track ode of bewildered love-funk dedicated to Firedrill’s hood and new home-city of Tokyo, Japan. Operating out of the hip Shimotakaido district, every morning Firedrill wakes up, brushes his teeth, steps onto the Keiō Line—and into a catastrophe of humanity. At nearly 40 million people, the Greater Tokyo Area is the planet’s largest metropolis. But saying it has 40 million people is one thing; being one of those 40 million people is a whole other matter entirely.

In Firedrill’s eyes, the city is a non-stop flow of the overwhelming: “You can pass by hundreds of restaurants and businesses in a single block. There are seemingly hundreds of music events to attend in a single day. I still can't believe the density of things happening around me here.”

But while on pen and paper Firedrill might seem incapacitated with awe, on the synthesizer and drum machine he remains the virtual virtuoso we all know. Shimokatastrophe is hot, sensual, and satisfied, a calm and confident tip of the hat not only to Tokyo but also to grime, dub, skweee, and everything in-between.
